With snow in the forecast here in Wichita, that means taking on the undesirable task of shoveling. By getting regular chiropractic care, you can keep your body in shape to tackle the task.
How Chiropractic Helps
From a chiropractic standpoint, looking at biomechanical motion, our joints and bodies were designed and created to work in a specific plan of motion. If things are out of alignment, people can experience wear and tear, sprains and strains. When the overworked muscle group is not doing what it’s supposed to, it compensates for the misalignment. When that happens, people can get those injuries a lot easier.
Chiropractic can help maintain balance and alignment. One of the important benefits of chiropractic is that it helps boost proprioceptive input from a brain standpoint. That helps us maintain better balance, so if things are a little icy or slick outside, having that better balance and proprioceptive input helps us better handle those unstable conditions.
From an adjustment standpoint, if someone has an injury from lifting, twisting, shoveling or falling, we can help get them back into alignment and back on track with their health.
Other Tips
- Gain traction: Be sure to wear proper boots that provide traction to help you maintain your balance and avoid falls.
- Don’t overdo it: While shoveling snow can be good exercise, it’s important not to overdo it. The combination of cold and overexertion can lead to dangerous heart attack symptoms. If you experience any pain, stop. You can also consider using a snowblower instead, or taking frequent breaks. Perhaps even better-hire someone to do the job.
- Use proper technique: If you must shovel snow, be sure to lift it properly. Squat with your legs apart, your knees bent, and your back straight. Always lift with your legs and don’t bend at the waist.
